When it comes to speaking, almost everyone can admit that they have said something in the past that they have regretted. We don’t always mean what we say.
This clearly shows that we barely have any control over our words, something that we ought to have.
If you are one of those who would like to learn how to control the things you say and when you say them, then this book should come really in handy for you.
In my zip it book review, I will be explaining how the author addresses the issue of speaking as well as the art of silence, how you should grow the virtues and master them.
Let us get right into the book and see how we should go about it.
Name: Zip It: The Keep It Shut 40-Day Challenge
Author: Karen Ehman
Best place to buy: www.amazon.com
Genre: Self Help Book
Publication Date: February 7, 2017
What It Is
This is a book that walks you through the path of taming the tongue according to the Bible. It also comes with a few practical advice that you can use to challenge yourself to make changes in your life in terms of words, on the long run.
All the advice you get inside the book is mainly aimed at helping you drop the negative impacts of your words and master to use it to encourage, inspire, bless, console and be kind to people, including those you do not know as well as the ones below you, as you perceive.
The book is mainly structured in 3 ways, a portion of the Scriptures that addresses this point, a story around it with a profound teaching and a few questions that set the pace for you to reflect on your words so as to understand yourself. There is also a bit of space that is left for you to answer the questions.
When you write the answers, you get the chance to know and accept yourself and grow as a whole.
You will get sections called entries that you will be working with everyday towards your goal. Each day you will be getting an entry with the 3 section structure I mentioned earlier. The entries also have a challenge that is based on the verse you read each day that gets you to put the verse to practice.
Zip it has been written by a well known author called Karen Ehman. She is a speaker for Proverbs 31 Ministries and has had a few other major achievements in this area. Her book has been given the New York’s Best Selling title and she also writes for an online devotion based program called Encouragement for Today.
Other books she is known for are KEEP IT SHUT: What to Say, How to Say It & When to Say Nothing at All and LET. IT. GO: How to Stop Running the Show & Start Walking in Faith. These are books you are going to gain more advice and strength from as you learn how to control your speech.
She was lucky enough to have marry to her college sweetheart, Todd, and she is a mother of three, who really enjoys cheering for the Detroit Tigers, hunting for antique as well as looking after her family.
What The Book Talks About
This book brings together all the resources you will need to become better at speaking. You will get insightful verses, interactive questions, challenges and other resources that will be training towards this direction.
It is designed to be used by you for 40 days as it has 40 entries, each with a set of proper speech activities that you should immerse yourself into if you want to get better at speaking in a way that glorifies the Holy One.
Getting involved everyday for 40 day straight will help you keep up a consistent growth and will also give you some time to think deeply about how you have been doing things in the past which will help you understand yourself even better in other areas of your life.
There are 4 steps that Karen recommends people to use which are expressed in various ways throughout the book. They give the gist of her teachings and help you see the big picture of all the things you will be getting into as you read the book. The steps I am talking about are:
1. Zip Your Lip
This step is inspired by the verse from proverbs that insists that talking in length attracts sin, which is very practical. It is when you speak a lot that you get the urge of sharing with others what someone else said or what you saw someone experience, which are not always positive things that the person you are talking about would like to hear you say.
So being brief with speech is key if you want to be safe and remain friends with almost everyone.
2. Get Away with God
This is all about spending time in prayer, or more of a deep conversation with the Almighty. This is where the grace to keep up with the entries comes from. Here, you are encouraged to take some time off your busy schedule simply to sit or kneel and have a conversation with the Lord. This goes a long way in enriching your life as a whole.
3. Ask Him to Cleanse Your Heart
This part stresses the need of accepting our weakness before the Holy One and asking for forgiveness and guidance as well as strength. It is through prayer and accepting that you can do nothing on your own that you give The Merciful One the chance to cleanse your heart.
4. Pray for Wisdom and Holy Spirit Power
Wisdom is the Lord’s insight in making use of the knowledge that we have. It is one thing to know how to do something and completely another to be able to use that knowledge in varying situations. To know what good speech is all about is great but to have the wisdom to use it in each and every situation of your life takes the power of the Holy Spirit, which we should ask for.
The Best Place to Buy the Book
I recommend you get the Zip It book from Amazon. It is my personal favorite store which is really convenient when it comes to shopping online. It is the safest place I know and it saves time if you were planning to do more online shopping today as you can get everything there.
My Personal Thoughts on the Book
I have to say that this books has delved into critical aspects of proper speech. I have seen other book that have attempted to adress the same topic but were not quite as interactive, practical and interesting as Zip it. I liked the idea of the entries and how much impact they make in your life when you take them seriously.
My personal advice to you is to get the book and read it while making the change in your life as you are walked through it. I also recommend you read other books of Karen like Keep It Shut when you are done with this one.
I hope this review has been helpful to you.
