Strong emotions about something, which have been commonly referred to as gut instincts, a third eye and intuitions do have a meaning in our lives. They manifest themselves in the form of unexplainable fear or suspicion or deep confusion and wonder.
And they are mostly brought up by your mind after seeing a series of indications of what is most likely to happen in the near future. If you have ever experienced this before, I am sure you can easy relate to it, and you can agree with me it is not such a nice feeling at all. Right?
Well, if you would like to learn the power of intuition and the indicators that make it spring up in order to save you from a potentially harmful situation, then you should definitely read this book.
It has a lot of insightful tips and advice to offer you, and mind opening experiences that I will be looking at within the gift of fear book review here. I will be helping you understand the main concept of the book and also mention a few aspects I loved about the book to help you know what to expect when you buy it.
So without any further ado, let’s get right into things here. 🙂
Name: The Gift of Fear
Author: Gavin de Becker
Best place to buy: www.amazon.com
Genre: Self Help Book
Publication Date: May 11, 1998
The Main Theme of the Book and More on the Author
Well, the book addresses the whole concept of your instincts, how they manifest themselves, what causes them and why you need to pay really close attention to them.
This instinct has been described as a gift which we all have and which we should learn to trust.
The strong feeling has been known to help avoid things like violence, rape, emotional harm and even murder, to the worst extremes.
The book has gone deeper into various instances where the feeling of fear, which has been used to refer to the gut instinct, has helped folks cheat death and saved them from what would have followed a life full of regrets if they ever survived the encounter.
The instances described in the book are things we hear as well as see happen almost everyday in our lives and the way they have been described makes you just want to listen to that inner feeling throughout your life.
Personally, the message in this book hit home for me after I read those instances and remembered almost exact situations I had been in, in the past that would have probably claimed my life.
The author of the Gift of Fear is the well known Gavin de Becker. He is a pretty skilled security specialist as well as author who has grown to be quite successful in the security industry.
If you have been a huge fan of the Oprah Winfrey Show for a long time now, then you should have seen him a couple of times telling his experience with victims who were harmed by other people and were saved at the last moment by following their instincts.
He was in the show somewhere in 1997 and in 2011.
He is the founder and the CEO of Gavin de Becker and Associates and has been hired for security reasons by large corporations, the government and was even hired by Bill Cosby to help with the case of the murder of Ennis, his son.
He also took part in the designing of the Mosaic Threat Assessment Systems which has proven to be successful in exposing the threats sent to prosecutors and federal judges.
Other than that, this book about the gift of fear has been rated as the bestselling book in the New York Best Sellers. The author has appeared on other shows like 20 over 20, Larry King Live, Waking up Podcast with Sam Harris and other popular magazines.
He has also published another book called Just 2 Seconds, to guide those people who take up the responsibility of helping others and the 5 lessons they should always keep in mind. It is another good book, I would encourage you to read.
Some More Meat of the Book and the Essential aspects Addressed
The book starts off with the story of Becky who was raped and almost killed by some stranger he met on her way home, in the building she lived in. He explains how the how the whole ordeal was and I am sure you are going to be surprised by how natural the events were before the rape happened.
It talks about the indicators of the harmful event that becky saw, how she didn’t pay much attention to them and what followed until she decided to follow them. It is a really touching story that has lots of valuable lessons.
After that, other topics that have been discussed in the book which I found pretty interesting are the PINS, which stand for the Pre Incident Indicators that hint you when something bad is about to happen.
These are the tiny signs that make you uncomfortable but which you are tempted to overlook depending on the set up of the situation. The signs are really clear and they make you feel somewhat aware of yourself, as you are going to note.
The Mosaic Threat Assessment System has also been delved into. In the book, you will learn all about it, the way it works as well as how it has been used to foretell of violence for government agencies and for famous figures.
The power of intuition along with the benefits it drags have been explained at great depth too.
The fear that women and men, which are quite different by the way, have been revealed in details and how to overcome them as well.
You will also get to understand why De Becker stresses that NO is a complete sentence and why you should often use it when you feel threatened.
Finally, to give you a glimpse of the book, here are just some of the PINS (pre incident indicators) that have been mentioned:
- Forced teaming
- Too many details
- Loan sharking
- Charm and niceness
- The unsolicited promise
- And more waiting in the book 🙂
The indicators are a real eye opener.
Best Place to Buy the Book

My Final Thoughts on The Gift of Fear
Personally, I do take intuitions very seriously. They have saved me not two times from events that would have either claimed my life or got me bedridden for years. Actually, some very wise person said that intuitions can show you more than what seven men standing on a high tower can tell you.
For this reason, I find this book to be very educative and important for someone who would want to avoid dangerous ordeals like rape, brutal violence, murder, deceit or any other situation that would cause harm to their lives.
You get to learn from other people’s real life experiences, know the signs and indicators to look out for and how to protect yourself before the harm gets to happen.
So I would say it is really worth the read.
And that is all about The Gift of Fear, friends!
