We all desire to be healthy, happy and successful and we look for these things in different ways.

Some people look by working extra hard and sacrificing simple pleasures while others chase their passion, relationships and others.

Meditation is also among the many ways to realize happiness in our lives, we take a look at how meditation helps us to be happier people.

What We All Crave For And Where We Look For it

As human beings, we all have that desire to live a fulfilled life. If we are married, we hope we are able to get beautiful kids who obey us and perform well at school.

Kids who will grow up to be influential people in various industries in the future. We hope and work towards providing all their needs. We also hope that we married the right person who values us as we value them.

As for our parents, we wish that we could have the means to take good care of them and see them love beyond 80 years for them to see their grandchildren and great-grandchildren, if possible.

For the unmarried, we hope that we could get the right partner for ourselves who understands us deeply and always aims at our happiness as we do the same for them.

Also, we hope that we could get our dream job or succeed in our passion and achieve our goals in terms of career and things we wished we could do before getting married.

And we all wish that we can have a peaceful time at home, school and work.

However, the reality of life is that we don’t get to live such a perfect life throughout. We tend to face challenges in terms of finance, health issues, death of a loved one and many others.

And such occurrences can really mess our meaning of life and have us questioning our purpose in life and the sad reality of this world.

But to be honest, when we look at the mentioned things as sources of happiness, we end up getting disappointed as we cannot control most of the occurrences that come into our lives.

Deepak Chopra says, “Happiness for a reason is just another form of misery because the reason can be taken away from us at any time.”

The Real Source of Happiness

As we chase the things we believe hold our happiness, we tend to get disappointed from time to time as things don’t always turn out as we hope.

We are constantly working to a close-to-perfect scenario where we have all we could ever wish for in the way we have always perceived in our minds, but that might as well be chasing wind.

See, life is like a see-saw. There are times you are up there with some aspects of your life while you are lagging behind with other areas.

When you are happy and healthy, you find that there are some financial issues that are disturbing you.

If you have money and health, maybe you have a child that has health issues or is a drug addict or has some cheeky behaviors.

When you don’t have any of that, you are surprised to hear that a close relative of yours has just passed on or you come to discover your partner is cheating on you.

It has and can never be a perfect life, especially if you also consider the fact that we crave for more when what we wanted has been achieved.

Therefore, when we go out for external things to make us happy, we most definitely get discouraged in the long run. External factors like health, financial stability, a good working environment and others are good and essential in our lives, to some extent.

But they are not our real sources of happiness.

Having a stable inner life is where the real source of happiness lies as you have control over it and can make it perfect if you set out to do it.

In the book “Spiritual Solutions: Answers to Life’s Greatest Challenges” Deepak Chopra also says, “Not every sky will be blue and every day is springtime. So on the spiritual path a person learns to find this kind of happiness without needing nice things to happen on the outside. Rather, you find happiness by being who you really are. This isn’t mystical. Young children are happy being who they are. The trick is to regain such a state when you are grown and have seen the light and dark sides of life”.

Peace and happiness are right there with you, you should not go looking them from other things out there.

“Peace comes from within, do not seek it without” The Buddha said.

And meditation is one of the paths that helps you perfect and nourish your inner life.

How Meditation Helps us Realize Happiness

When you focus on your inner life and aim to improve it, you slowly but surely come to realize that the external factors that you considered your pillar of happiness were actually the sources of your misery, since you only hold little control over them.

When you discover that you are actually able to control your emotions, feelings and mental state, suddenly a new world opens up for you.

You cease to become a victim of circumstances and become a much stronger and stable person who can withstand the external blocks that keep pulling you back.

To access this inner life and establish it steadily, you need to train your mind. This is where meditation comes to play.

Along with the many benefits of meditation, the practice helps you stabilize yourself, both mentally and emotionally.

It trains you to become aware, focused, relaxed and in good control over your emotions.

In the grand scheme of things, meditation reduces the huge reliance on the external things and brings out a new, reliable and essential aspect of your life that holds the keys to your true happiness.

And the best part is, you have full control over it.

When you meditate, you become calm, focused and relaxed. These 3 benefits alone can help you find great peace and contentment.

You leave the thoughts of the past and future, and focus on the present moment. Immediately, stress and anxiety and depression fades away.

As you keep meditating you gain more mental space to react better to challenging situations and get to reason better on how to go about various events in your life while maintaining your peace.

And we have barely scratched the surface on the power of meditation.

However, it is good to note that meditation doesn’t help you find instant happiness. It is a journey that you must take.

You must meditate often.

You also have to take time to grow slowly, dropping one stressful thought after another. One discouraging perspective of life after another. One depressing habit after the other.

And soon enough, you will bring out the happiness that has always been there within you but was covered by the mist of suffering, wrong thought, perspectives and habits.

Ideally, meditation is all about connecting with your true self and living your life at its best.

These and other benefits of meditation are enjoyed when you make meditation a critical habit of yours and part of your lifestyle.

    You know I never use to understand why people can not just decide to be happy, it is something I find very easy to do, when times are tough on my side I just try and find something about the situation that can give me a bit of optimism and my mood changes. This was me until I started dating my current girlfriend, she has difficulty finding optimism in any situation and this makes her depressed most of the time. Having read your article I think I have found something that can help her.

  2. hello, thank you for this awesome article. During periods of real relaxation, our hormones and physiological responses of stress naturally dissipate and do very little harm, but then unfortunately this is not the case if we have  found ourselves on a high-alert. In this cases, the end result is exhaustion, vulnerability to illness and sometimes unhappiness.

    Thanks for this awesome article on meditation. Meditation is very advantageous to human health especially in times like this that we are experiencing this global pandemic (Covid-19). Meditation has the ability to shrink the portion of one’s brain called the “amygdala” a section of the mind which controls fearfulness and anxiety, so the smaller it gets, the happier you’ll be. I love meditating so much especially when I am feeling moody and sad it helps to increase happiness by detaching from my emotions. So it really does make one happier.
