What it is
Brain over binge is a book that talks about bulimia and binge eating disorder.
The author, Kathryn Hansen, candidly shares her experience as a bulimic and her alternative approach to recovery.
This book is different than other eating disorder book which typically present binge eating and purging as symptoms of complex emotional and psychological problems.
Brain over binge disputes this mainstream idea and explains why traditional eating disorder therapy will fail you.
Kathryn, the author, explains how she came to understand her bulimia in a new way as a function of her brain, and how she used the power of her brain to recover quickly and permanently.
Kathryn also sheds new light on eating disorder topics such as low self-esteem, poor body image, and dieting.
Kathryn Hansen recovered from bulimia independently, abruptly, and completely over 6 years ago and soon after her recovery, she was fully convinced she had a powerful story to tell a story that could give other bulimics and those with binge eating disorder hope, a new perspective, and a commonsense cure.
She dedicated herself to candidly documenting her experience, in hope that her book can shed new light on these disorders that ruin so many lives.
For a long time, Kathryn felt like a hopeless case. She thought maybe she could never completely recover.
She thought she would have to deal with her eating disorder one-day-at-a-time but she recovered from bulimia independently, abruptly, and completely over 6 years ago; and soon after her recovery, she was fully convinced she had a powerful story to tell – a story that could give other bulimics and those with binge eating disorder hope, a new perspective, and a commonsense cure.
She dedicated herself to candidly documenting her experience, in hope that her book can shed new light on these disorders that ruin so many lives. For a long time, Kathryn felt like a hopeless case.
She thought maybe she could never completely recover. She thought she would have to deal with her eating disorder one-day-at-a-time for the rest of her life, but she doesn’t.
She has zero risk for relapse, even during stressful times in her life. She believes that if recovery was possible for her, it is possible for anyone.
Kathryn recovered only after she parted with therapy and let go of most of its ideas. She found another way to end her bulimia, and now she shares her alternative approach with others in Brain over Binge.
Kathryn hopes her voice can be a voice of change, a voice for those who are frustrated with therapy or who simply can’t afford it, a voice that will help many escape the daily torment of binge eating and purging.
What the book talks about
The book talks about binge eating.
According to the book, binge eating is characterized by eating a large quantity of food during a very short period of time (less than 2 hours).
Binge eating disorder (BED) is considered as a disorder usually triggered by emotions and then set by habit.
Steps to recovery according to this book:
Step 1: View Your Urges to Binge as Neurological Junk.
In this book you are taught to recognize that the brain is part high consciousness (highest human brain Kathryn calls it) and part survival mechanism.
You want to begin to realize perhaps a new paradigm that you HAVE thoughts, you are not your thoughts. When you begin to recognize the useless, nasty, hurtful thoughts you have are part of that survival brain sending you signals out of habit patterns you can begin to regain your power.
Step 2: Separate Your Highest Human Brain From Your Urges to Binge
When you are in your highest consciousness, you can detect the difference between the lower, survival human brain thoughts.
Low level survival thoughts are
always negative, self-defeating, rushed/panic-like, hurtful and all sort of negative things. Your highest consciousness self is always in a place of love, adoration and timelessness.
When you can become the observer, your highest consciousness, your most empowered self, you can then
observe the lower, survival brain binge thoughts for what they are. Junk. Just stuff floating through your brain that you DO NOT have to act upon.
3.Step 3: Stop Reacting to the Binge Urges.
The freedom from bulimia and the urge to binge comes when you STOP reacting to the urge. You begin to disassociate from the thoughts and remember that you are an observer having thoughts, you are not those thoughts. They can’t hurt you. They can’t make you pick up the food. They can’t tell anyone lies or hurtful things – those thoughts all literally live in the matter inside your brain.
Step 4: Stop Acting on the Urges to Binge
Once you just allow the thoughts to happen instead of immediately acting on the binge urge, you’ll begin to train your brain that you’re not interested in keeping that linked up (i.e eating large amounts of food isn’t a good thing so stop sending me the urge).
In that moment of not acting on that urge, You will start to re-train your brain to not send that signal again. That’s the same thing you do with stopping the urge to binge.
Step 5: Get Excited!
Show and teach the brain that not reacting to the urges is important to you. The brain is trying to win, or survive, and teaching it that you get to win when you don’t binge is just the kind of reinforcement it needs to stop sending you the wrong signals and start sending you better ones.
Best Place to Buy The Book
The best place I recommend you buy the book is on Amazon. The price there is fair and according to my research, it is the most trusted online store at the moment. It will also be very convenient for you to buy there if you were planning to do more online shopping today.
This is a great book,it will be useful to you if you have an eating disorder. However,am thinking how many people will change their eating habits off of reading a book and training your brain?
