What It Is
A Course in Miracles (also referred to as ACIM or the Course ) is a 1976 book containing a curriculum which claims to assist its readers in achieving spiritual transformation.
The underlying premise of the work is the teaching that the greatest ” miracle ” that one may achieve in one’s life is the act of simply gaining a full “awareness of love’s presence” in one’s own life.
The landmark guide is in as much demand today as it was when it was first published in 1975. This updated text is split into three volumes which include the text, workbook for students and manual for teachers.
Although the course is Christian in statement, it deals with universal spiritual themes, and is designed to help achieve dramatic, lasting results in every aspect of your life.
Helen Cohn Schucman (July 14, 1909 – February 9, 1981) (born Helen Dora Cohn ) was an American clinical and research psychologist.
She was a professor of medical psychology at Columbia University in New York from 1958 until her retirement in 1976. Schucman is best known for having “scribed” with the help of colleague
William Thetford the book A Course in Miracles (1st edition, 1975), the contents of which she claimed to have been given to her by an inner voice she identified as Jesus . From this i just feel that the book was really written on a really deep level and i can only imagine how much this book was personal to her.
However, as per her request, her role as its “writer” was not revealed to the general public until after her death.
Schucman was born Helen Dora Cohn in 1909 to Sigmund Cohn, a prosperous metallurgical chemist, and Rose Black, who had married on October 18, 1896, in Manhattan.
Schucman had a brother, Adolph Cohn, who was almost 12 years her senior. Though her parents were both half- Jewish , they were non-observant.
Schucman’s mother Rose dabbled in Theosophy and various expressions of Christianity such as Christian Science and the Unity School of Christianity.
However, it was the family housekeeper, Idabel, a Baptist, who had the deepest religious influence on Schucman while she was growing up. This honestly for me, was really amazing . Housekeepers are treated unfairly in some homes and time again humiliated but this biography shows us that they have a lot to offer to us therefore its really important that we treat them right.
In 1921, when she was 12, Schucman visited Lourdes, France , where she had a spiritual experience, and in 1922 she was baptized as a Baptist.
She received her B.A. from New York University (NYU), (1931–1935), where she met fellow student Louis Schucman in 1932 and whom she married, in a 10-minute ceremony in a local rabbi’s office, on May 26, 1933.
Louis owned one or more bookstores on ” Book Row ” in Manhattan, and during the early years of their marriage Schucman worked at his main store. Growing restless in her early forties, she returned to NYU to study psychology. She received her M.A. in 1952, followed by her Ph.D. (1952–1957).
Schucman was a clinical and research psychologist, who held the tenured position of Associate Professor of Medical Psychology at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons at the Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. During her tenure at Columbia University , Schucman worked with William Thetford , whom she first met in early 1958.
All her experience and professionalism just proves that she has wat takes to deliver a good book.
What The Book Talks About.
Lessons from the book:
This course is a beginning, not an end. Your Friend goes with you. You are not alone. No one who calls on Him can call in vain.
Whatever troubles you, be certain that He has the answer, and will gladly give it to you, if you simply turn to Him and ask it of Him.
He will not withhold all answers that you need for anything that seems to trouble you. He knows the way to solve all problems, and resolve all doubts.
His certainty is yours. You need but ask it of Him, and it will be given you. You are as certain of arriving home as is the pathway of the sun laid down before it rises, after it has set, and in the half-lit hours in between.
Indeed, your pathway is more certain still. For it can not be possible to change the course of those whom God has called to Him.
Therefore obey your will, and follow Him Whom you accepted as your voice, to speak of what you really want and really need. His is the Voice for God and also yours.
And thus He speaks of freedom and of truth. No more specific lessons are assigned, for there is no more need of them. Henceforth, hear but the Voice for God and for your Self when you retire from the world, to seek reality instead.
He will direct your efforts, telling you exactly what to do, how to direct your mind, and when to come to Him in silence, asking for His sure direction and His certain Word.
His is the Word that God has given you. His is the Word you chose to be your own. And now I place you in His hands, to be His faithful follower, with Him as Guide through every difficulty and all pain that you may think is real. Nor will He give you pleasures that will pass away, for He gives only the eternal and the good.
Let Him prepare you further. He has earned your trust by speaking daily to you of your Father and your brother and your Self. He will continue. Now you walk with Him, as certain as is He of where you go; as sure as He of how you should proceed; as confident as He is of the goal, and of your safe arrival in the end.
The end is certain, and the means as well. To this we say “Amen.” You will be told exactly what God wills for you each time there is a choice to make. And He will speak for God and for your Self, thus making sure that hell will claim you not, and that each choice you make brings Heaven nearer to your reach.
And so we walk with Him from this time on, and turn to Him for guidance and for peace and sure direction. Joy attends our way. For we go homeward to an open door which God has held unclosed to welcome us.
We trust our ways to Him and say “Amen.” In peace we will continue in His way, and trust all things to Him. In confidence we wait His answers, as we ask His Will in everything we do. He loves God’s Son as we would love him.
And He teaches us how to behold him through His eyes, and love him as He does. You do not walk alone. God’s angels hover near and all about. His Love surrounds you, and of this be sure; that I will never leave you comfortless.
Prayer is a way of asking for something. It is the medium of miracles. But the only meaningful prayer is for forgiveness, because those who have been forgiven have everything.
To forgive is merely to remember only the loving thoughts you gave in the past, and those that were given you.
Prayer is the medium of miracles. It is a means of communication of the created with the Creator. Through prayer love is received, and through miracles love is expressed.
Be not afraid. We only start again an ancient journey long ago begun that but seems new. We have begun again upon a road we travelled on before and lost our way a little while. And now we try again.
If you point out the errors of your brother’s ego you must be seeing through yours, because the Holy Spirit does not perceive his errors. This must be true, since there is no communication between the ego and the Holy Spirit.
The ego makes no sense, and the Holy Spirit does not attempt to understand anything that arises from it. Since He does not understand it, He does not judge it, knowing that nothing the ego makes means anything.
Everyone defends his treasure, and will do so automatically. The real questions are, what do you treasure, and how much do you treasure it? Once you have learned to consider these questions and to bring them into all your actions, you will have little difficulty in clarifying the means.
The means are available whenever you ask. You can, however, save time if you do not protract this step unduly. The correct focus will shorten it immeasurably.
Miracles enable you to heal the sick and raise the dead because you made sickness and death yourself, and can therefore abolish both. You are a miracle, capable of creating in the likeness of your Creator. Everything else is your own nightmare, and does not exist. Only the creations of light are real.
Best Place to Buy The Book
The best place I recommend you buy the book is on Amazon. The price there is fair and according to my research, it is the most trusted online store at the moment. It will also be very convenient for you to buy there if you were planning to do more online shopping today.
Buy the book from amazon here
I think that the book is really good with some great insights however for people who are really not into reading books on a deeper level would be bored by it because it is really lengthy.
