What It Is
The Purpose Driven Life (2002) is a devotional book written by Christian author Rick Warren and published by Zondervan .

The book offers readers a 40-day personal spiritual journey and presents what Warren says are God ‘s five purposes for human life on Earth and describes itself as “a blueprint for Christian living in the 21st Century .

Using about 350 references to the Bible, maybe this amounts to over 1200 biblical verses and quotes to challenge the conventional definitions of Christian Worship , Fellowship, Discipleship , Christian Ministry and Evangelism .

Richard Duane ” Rick ” Warren (born January 28, 1954) is an American evangelical Christian pastor and author. This explains why this book am about to review has such a rich christian background.

He was raised in Ukiah, California , and graduated from Ukiah High School in 1972, where he founded the first Christian club on the school’s campus. Tgis goes to show that his christian journey started while still a young man.

Warren received a Bachelor of Arts degree from California Baptist University in Riverside, California; a Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (1979) in Fort Worth, Texas; and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. This proves that he has what it takes to deliver a good book.

He is the founder and senior pastor of Saddleback Church, an evangelical megachurch in Lake Forest, California , that is the eighth-largest church in the United States (including multi-site churches ).

He is also a bestselling author of many Christian books, including his guide to church ministry and evangelism, The Purpose Driven Church, which has spawned a series of conferences on Christian ministry and evangelism.

He is perhaps best known for the subsequent book The Purpose Driven Life which has sold more than 30 million copies, making Warren a New York Times bestselling author.

Warren holds conservative theological views [ dead link ] and traditional evangelical views on social issues such as abortion, same-sex marriage, abstinence-only education over the use of condoms to prevent HIV/AIDS, and
embryonic stem-cell research . These are basically some of the issues affecting people on a daily basis so it is good having him talk about these issues.

During the 2008 United States presidential election , Warren hosted the Civil Forum on the Presidency at his church with both presidential candidates, John McCain and Barack Obama .

Obama later sparked controversy when he asked Warren to give the invocation at the presidential inauguration in January 2009.

What The Book Talks About
Lessons from the book:

Being successful and fulfilling your lifes purpose are not at all the same thing; You can reach all your personal goals, become a raving success by the worlds standard and still miss your purpose in this life.

True humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less.We are products of our past, but we don’t have to be prisoners of it.

Time is your most precious gift because you only have a set amount of it. You can make more money, but you can’t make more time. When you give someone your time, you are giving them a portion of your life that you’ll never get back.

Your time is your life. That is why the greatest gift you can give someone is your time.

It is not enough to just say relationships are important; we must prove it by investing time in them. Words alone are worthless. “My children, our love should not be just words and talk; it must be true love, which shows itself in action.” Relationships take time and effort, and the best way to spell love is

Forgiveness must be immediate, whether or not a person asks for it. Trust must be rebuilt over time. Trust requires a track record.

Resentment always hurts you more than it does the person you resent. While your offender has probably forgotten the offense and gone on with life, you continue to stew in your pain, perpetuating the past.

Listen: those who hurt you in the past cannot continue to hurt you now unless you hold on to the pain through resentment. Your past is past! Nothing will change it. You are only hurting yourself with your bitterness. For your own sake, learn from it, and then let it go.

Trusting God completely means having faith that He knows what is best for your life. You expect Him to keep His promises, help you with problems, and do the impossible when necessary.

Experience is not what happens to you. It is what you do with what happens to you. Don’t waste your pain; use it to help others.

Other people are going to find healing in your wounds. Your greatest life messages and your most effective ministry will come out of your deepest hurts.

God intentionally allows you to go through painful experiences to equip you for ministry to others.

Humility is not thinking less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less. Humility is thinking more of others.

If not to God, you will surrender to the opinions or expectations of others, to money, to resentment, to fear, or to your own pride, lusts, or ego. You were designed to worship God and if you fail to worship Him, you will create other things (idols) to give your life to. You are free to choose, what you surrender to but you are not free from the consequence of that choice.

You weren’t put on earth to be remembered. You were put here to prepare for eternity.

You cannot fulfil God’s purposes for your life while focusing on your own plans.

Best Place to Buy The Book

The best place I recommend you buy the book is on Amazon. The price there is fair and according to my research, it is the most trusted online store at the moment. It will also be very convenient for you to buy there if you were planning to do more online shopping today.

My Thoughts
I think that there is some really great material in here. The approach on how to handle temptation, as well as the “traps” mentioned near the end of the book, are excellent.

There are also bits that use methods I’ve seen in other, secular self-help books, but they’re written for a more Christian-palatable application.

The only thing i feel would be an issue with this book is that it is more of a christian book and therefore will affect how much it is read by people most especially people from a different religion.
