Emotions can be pretty hard to understand and control at times. They overwhelm you when faced by certain hectic situations and it gets difficult to know how to behave. The most common emotions that weigh many folks down are fear, panic and anxiety, and I am sure it would be great to know how to conquer them all, right?
Well, the book, Hope and Help For Your Nerves, comes really in handy in that area.
It walks through the understanding of these emotions and the best way to overcome them once and for all.
In this Hope and help for your nerves book review, I will be walking you through the gist of the book, the author, some more meat of the book, the best place to buy it and my final thoughts on it.
So, without any further ado, let’s get started.
Name: Hope and Help for Your Nerves
Author: Claire Weekes
Best Place to Buy: www.amazon.com
Genre: Self Help Book
Publication Date: September 4, 1990
The Gist of the Book
This is pretty much a book that helps you understand fear, panic and anxiety and get to conquer it. The book helps you know the common causes of the emotions and how they manifest both mentally and physically.
It gives a variety of symptoms for each to help you know for sure which one gets control over you the most.
It also clears up the confusion with panic and anxiety. The author says that there is a significant difference which you need to understand so that you know exactly, which is which, and know how to deal with it.
The way the author explains the emotions makes you learn a lot. And there are times I feel that if the book only gave that, it would be more than enough.
However, the book goes a step forward to train you how to take control of each of the emotions the right way and free yourself for good.
The author of the book is Dr. Hazel Claire Weekes, who was born in 11th April 1903, and sadly passed on 2nd June 1990. She was a well known health author and general practitioner in Australia. She was also involved in the comparative reproduction field as a research scientist.
She is believed to be one of the founders of modern treatment of anxiety through cognitive therapy. Her work has been frequently referred to by many recent authors, which means she is well versed in this area.
Some More Meat of the Book
Now that you know the gist, I would like to give you a sneak peek of some aspects of the book to help you know how good the book is.
I had said that the book helps you know how to overpower each of the emotions and there is a certain strategy that Claire offers in the book which I found very interesting as well as effective for someone who works seriously with it.
The strategy has 4 steps to it which take effort to see good results. The 4 steps I am talking about are:
- Facing – Here, you are shown the proper way to face the fear, anxiety and panic. You are told that you should not make an effort to fight it as that will get you exhausted. She offers a series of guidance on how to go about this step.
- Accepting – This step requires you to know the symptoms and accept them. If you come to know that you have symptoms for an emotion you thought you never had, just learn to accept it so that you can move on. She also shows you how you learn to accept the situation that stirs up the emotion within you.
- Floating – This step walks you though the idea of floating through or above the emotions instead of trying to resist them or fight them off.
- Letting time pass – This is the last step. And here, you are supposed to learn how to give yourself time and be patient as you go through self empowerment phase. The author gives some really useful advice as to how to do it and the main importance of not beating yourself down wanting quick results.
The goal of the book is to get you to be calm and accepting of the situations that get you worked up. And while I have tried to talk about the book in the fewest words possible, I really recommend you read the book as it gets into detail with every aspect I have mentioned here.
The steps are simple but without the right guidance and support from someone as well acquainted in the field as Claire, it is going to be a hard nut to crack.
Best Place to Buy the Book
I encourage you to get the book from www.amazon.com as it is the leading online store in the world that has been loved by many folks out there. It is my personal favorite store, actually. The services they offer are great and the recommendations they offer for the things you get there is just helpful and amazing.
The store also has summary books of many books like this one to help you sieve through the main points quickly and also make the most of the book not to mention having something to refer to in the future.
My Final Thoughts on the Book
Well, I have to say that this is one of the most insightful books I have seen on emotions especially fear, and panic. It has tackled them very well, starting from their causes, their symptoms and their “treatment” which I found very comprehensive.
I also have to say that the book is going to be helpful in those people who not only struggle with minor stress, anxiety, fear and panic, but also those who have major disorders on them.
Knowing that the author happens to be one of the founders of the treatment you will get in most hospitals for these issues, it is certain that reading the book will give you more value and insight into what you get in the hospital.
In summary, I would say that the book is really worth getting, reading and working with the solutions it offers.
And that is where I take my well deserved break folks!
